Rogers Mobile Internet Stick on OSX 8

Posted by markm Sun, 21 Dec 2008 22:51:00 GMT

I really like Rogers Mobility products and services - but that is another rant - so when they called me up and offered me a sweet deal on a Mobile Internet Stick I took them up on it. When I went to a local Rogers store and picked one up the sales person said, "this took a Mac expert from Westworld Computers and me four hours to get running on a Mac - you better get their help."

Now we both know that there is no possible way that this is a four hour job. Especially when you think about who makes the "Stick" for Rogers: it is a Novatel Wireless Ovation MC950D. Novatel Wireless has been a Mac-Friendly company for years and they will definitely have drivers. So I took a quick look at their website and not only did they have drivers, but they also have put together a guide on how to get the "Stick" up and running. I grabbed their drivers and was up and running on Leopard in 4 minutes not four hours.

Painless.

At my house I can get about 3.6Mbps down and 1.2Mbps up. To put that into perspective it is faster than Telus ADSL. It is faster than their so called High Speed Enhanced Internet and when the Rogers network is upgraded to 7.2 Mbps it will be faster than their so called High Speed Extreme Internet.

In case you have never done this before there are a bunch of settings that are required to get things running. You need to type in the Account Name and the Password. You will also need to go into the advanced settings and set your APN.

Account Name: wapuser1

Password: wap

APN: internet.com

I followed these instructions and this is what I found. works great until you restart the computer. Logging the user out, then in, is fine. closing the lid and reopening is fine.

but after a restart….. the menubar icon says “No modem configurations were found”

The modem still shows in the system preferences/network/network port configurations, and the advanced settings stay, but when i try to connect I get a pop up window that says. “Internet Connect” “The selected communication device does not exist.” “Please verify your settings and try again”

I have to download driver again to get it to work.

Yeah, if you experience this issue the fix is simple - open System Preferences > Network. You will see the USB Modem as one of your network profiles - you can connect from here. Once you have connected everything will work as it should.

If you start your computer without the USB device plugged in this will be required every time.

I cannot receive or send email. I have the mobile internet stick and it is installed properly. As I can’t get email can you phone me at ###-###-#### and tell me how to either connect Outlook or some other email supplier. I seem unable to connect to my supplier rogers.com. Thanks, Anita Hitchcock

Anita - I removed your number because it is not the sort of thing you should just post on the web…

I am not sure why you are unable to receive mail. I am not a “PC” user and since you are talking about Outlook you must be. Any issues related to that you will need to get someone else to help with.

As for outgoing mail, rogers likely is blocking the traffic to prevent SPAM. Etiher use their smtp server (smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com) or switch to another port.

Best to talk to your email provider for help with that.

    Thank you!!!

We got ours June 2 ‘09, worked fine on our ASUS in the store. Problems with the Mac at home though. The stick now comes with a CD with drivers for the Mac. However, the drivers and manual did not correspond with my 10.5.6 OS. I was getting nowhere. I found your piece here and got the drivers, but not the instructions. I assumed those on the CD would be the same. WRONG. When I also downloaded the instructions from Novatel site, I was up and running in no time flat!

Anyone else wondering, pay no attention to the CD that comes with the stick unless Rogers tells you it is updated. Mark tells it like it is.

I have only had problems, problems, problems with my Rogers Internet stick. After 5 lengthy calls to the techies at Rogers, the stick is still not working consistently. And they have already sent me a new one (TWICE!) Not sure if it is a problem with VISTA or what. I AM A VERY DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER! When the thing does work (rarely) it is so slow that a website takes 5 to 10 minutes to load. Just ridiculous!!!

No offense intended but either it is Vista or you are doing something wrong. My internet stick works great.

Not saying it is your fault - Vista is a really poor OS. And this sort of thing is probably hard to diagnose over the phone. I should also point out that this article clearly talks about the setup on Apple’s OS X and not Windows.

There are at least 3 different “Internet Sticks” that Rogers is using and so mileage may vary depending on which one you have.

That being said, my stick works really, really well. I have ran a bunch of tests with it and I would say it is typically faster than Telus “High Speed” ADSL.

Have you considered switching to a Mac…
